When your computer becomes sluggish it’s a serious chore to get anything done. There’s nothing worse than needing to write a letter, do homework, get directions, play a game, etc. When the computer is not cooperative, you just can’t get much done at all. This kind of situation happens a lot and helps to explain while so many people are searching the Internet for ways to make computers run faster. There are some simple things you can do without taking any unnecessary risks.
If you’ve been around long enough, you’ll remember when all the computer problems started: Windows. Since then there’s been nothing but problems: blue screens of death, full hard drives and all types of crashes. More people got computers and the computers got faster and did more things. Now there’s the World Wide Web and all the malicious threats that people have created for the express purpose of trashing your property. There are a lot of things you should check when you first notice that your computer is running slow.
One thing is to remember not to open Email attachments. Since most people use Email programs, the most destructive things are still distributed through Email. If you see something that you don’t recognize or you don’t know where it came from, delete it or send it to your spam. You don’t need any worms or viruses getting out through your computer, do you?
Take some time to uninstall some of the programs you don’t use. Open up the programs applet in Windows’ Control Panel. Look at all the programs in there and uninstall the ones you don’t use. You can also use Windows Explorer to browse the files that are on your hard drive. All those old movies and games you’ve got on there and haven’t used for years need to be deleted. If you’ll feel better, copy your files to a DVD so you can delete them with comfort. All this junk fills up your hard drive, leaving less space for Windows to use for swap files. This is especially a problem when you don’t have a lot of memory installed.
Scan your entire computer for viruses, spyware, adware, and malware on a monthly basis. If you or someone else has had problems with your machine, you might want to scan it more often. You can also use Windows tools like Disk Cleanup to help recover disk space. You can use Microsoft’s Security Essentials tool to protect against malware. Another thing you should do is run the Windows disk defragmenter to keep your hard drive running efficiently. Another thing you need to do is back up your computer now before it gets really messed up.
Finally, there are utility programs that you can buy that will help repair and optimize your computer. Be careful when you purchase these because some of them are malware themselves. Get something like Symantec’s Norton Utilities or PC Tools: something well known with a good reputation. These programs will help keep your registry in good shape.
